The "Reports to" Hierarchy Explained

Full Story

The "Reports to" Feature lets you create lists and target People based on who they report to in your organisation. Before you can Search for People using the "Reports to" Feature, you will need to configure your data with an import\update using either Employee ID or Email Address. Using this information, Poppulo Harmony will automatically build a hierarchy for your organisation.

What is Hierarchy?

A hierarchy matches your organisational chart. When you import your data, you will include a column(s) which tell Poppulo Harmony who is reporting to who. At the top of the Organisational tree, you will have someone reporting to themselves, to close the tree. This hierarchy can have multiple levels allowing you to target People reporting directly to a manager, for example, or to target all direct or indirect reports of a manager(A Department Head with 3 managers reporting to them and the people reporting to those managers, for example.) Lets take a looks at some examples below using Email Address as the unique identifier.

Single Level of Hierarchy

In this example, there is a single level. All employees are reporting to manager@cubicorp.com. Your import file will look like this:

The resulting Hierarchy created by Poppulo Harmony will look like this:

2 Levels of Hierarchy

In this example, the manager@cubicorp.com has 3 direct reports. These 3 direct reports have people reporting to them also. The import file will look like this:
User-added image

The resulting Hierarchy created by Poppulo Harmony will look like this:

When you Search for People using the "Reports to" Feature, a direct reports search for Manager will return John, Jess and Jobe. If you run a All Employees search, it will not only return John, Jess and Jobe, but also their direct reports(Nate, Nick, Sam, Mitt and Matt).

Multiple Levels of Hierarchy

In this final example there are several levels in the organisation. manager@cubicorp.com is still at the top of the tree, however, those reporting to the manager have several levels below them. The import file will look like this:
User-added image

The resulting Hierarchy created by Poppulo Harmony will look like this:

Although this is a much more complicated org chart with several layers in the hierarchy, the concept remains the same. When you Search for People using the "Reports to" Feature, a Direct Reports search for Manager will return John, Jess and Jobe. If you run a All Employees search, it will return everyone in the chart. Similarly, running a Direct Report for Jobe will return Mitt and Matt; an All Employee search will return everyone in blue beneath Jobe.
